CMA, relying on national science and technology programs, focuses on promoting basic meteorological studies and key technology research. CMA actively undertakes key projects of national key research and development plans and puts great efforts in key technological breakthroughs in core fields of meteorology, such as Earth System NWP models, synoptic mechanisms and forecast for disastrous weather, climate change, satellite remote sensing, weather modification, and meteorological equipment. The technological innovation capabilities of precise monitoring, accurate forecasting, and tailor-made service have been reinforced to provide strong support for the high-quality development of the meteorological undertakings. CMA and the National Natural Science Foundation of China have established a joint meteorological fund, with which well-organized and goal-oriented basic research has been conducted, focusing on core areas such as Earth System NWP, theories and methods for disastrous weather monitoring and forecasting, the application of artificial intelligence in meteorology, technology and application of atmospheric observation, and short-term climate prediction and theory and methods of climate change. Its aim is to cultivate excellent talents and to enhance the vitality of technological innovation.
